President Donald Trump told reporters on Oct. 16 that the Kurds in Syria are “no angels” and that they are “well protected” by Syria. Answering questions during a bilateral meeting with Italy’s president, Trump defended his highly criticized decision to withdraw U.S. troops from northern Syria, allowing Turkey to launch an invasion against the Kurds. Kurdish fighters were a key partner of U.S. troops in the battle against ISIS in northeast Syria.
