Rep. Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, questioned Kurt Volker, the former U.S. special envoy to Ukraine, in a public hearing as part of the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. In response to Schiff’s questions, Volker said he saw investigations into Burisma and the Bidens as distinct, but understands now that many people saw the two as “synonymous.” The impeachment probe centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Volker was one of several government officials who discussed getting Ukraine to investigate Burisma, a Ukrainian company that paid Hunter Biden to sit on its board.
